I'm a Survivor!
I'm Bezil McWeasel, and this is my story. Some of it is sad, all of it is true, and I hope it encourages you.
My story begins with a phone call. My previous owner abandoned me at a relative's house and took off. I was probably about 5 years old when this happened. It was a big shock to me. But I tried my best to be good and make the best of the situaton. This relative, I believe it was my owner's aunt, had many little children. So this new person called Heather and said that she must take me, she got a new couch I was not meant to be near, and I would mess it up. And if Heather did not agree, she would let me go by the side of the road. So I became Heather's first truely rescued ferret. The lady left the car running and dropped me off. Heather said she would find me a good home, and the reply she got was "whatever."
And that's when my story gets better. I got a bath, and my nails trimmed and my ears cleaned. (In retrospect that probably shouldn't have been done the first day, but my new owner Heather was so excited she just wanted everything to be perfect for me). I was so scared I stayed in the pillowcase she gave me for three full days, not wanting to come out at all. But finally she made this *wonderful* tasting stuff, with chicken babyfood all warmed up and that tasted so good I came out to eat that. My teeth are bad and so eating hard food hurts. Slowly I came out of my shell, and began to explore little by little.
But then, about a month later, while Heather was playing with me, she noticed my lymph nodes were swollen. The lymph nodes are part of the lymphatic system. Clusters of lymph nodes are found in the underarms, groin, neck, chest, and abdomen. They have several important functions and are good indicators of disease. Lymph nodes act as filters, with an internal honeycomb of connective tissue filled with lymphocytes that collect and destroy bacteria and viruses. During a physical exam the external ones can be palpated to determine if they are enlarged.
So she took me into the vet and I was diagnosed with lymphoma (also know as lymphosarcoma). I was put on Prednisone and given a poor prognoises, a few months if that to live.
But Heather and her family didn't give up on me. Determined to give me the best life while I was here, we started a daily routine of good food, my medicine, and some great playtime. It gives me sometime to live for and look forward too. And also plenty of prayer. As is her motto "good care and prayer."
So now I am coming up on One Year of remission. I've gone through two baby playpens, when I wasn't feeling so good I would stay in, but now I just dig through those in no time! I also now have a "wife" and cagemate, Maggie, you can read her story in " Permanent Residents" as well. We just love each other. So in a few days I'm having a party! I might even lick a little ice cream in honor of my one year survival. There were some ups and downs but I try to have a happy attitude, and just live for the day.
What? Aren't you gonna rub my tummy?
Stay tuned for pictures from his party coming next week!
